More Turkeys
Don't tell Gary, but Melody the naragansett hen has hatched out a few more turkey poults. Melody is the greatest turkey mother. She is very patient with her broods and extremely attentive. She even fostered a baby duck earlier this summer.
Unfortunately this duck now thinks she is a turkey and follows her broodmates everywhere. Poor thing paces from the ground and looks up to her siblings when the turkeys fly up on things like trees, roofs and trucks. In honor of her split personality I have named her Durkey.
But back to Melody. What also makes her a beauty is that she allows me to touch her eggs and her babies when she is broody. If you have ever attempted this with a turkey hen, you know this is no small feat. A broody turkey will hiss and attack with a sharp beak and her wings if she feels threatened. Ask me how I know. But Melody will softly cluck and lift up her petticoat of underfeathers so I can get my hand in to check what's underneath.
It's supposed to rain all day today so I am sure that Melody will keep her babies in the doghouse where she's been sitting. Admit it - there's nothing cuter than turkey babies!
