Chickens these days
I mentioned yesterday that the abundance of fruit on the trees indicates that we will probably have a harsh winter. The Farmer's Almanac doesn't say it will be so harsh. But the signs are there.
Including signs from the chickens. My chickens have been molting early. It's very odd. They typically molt in October but most of the birds here have dropped feathers and have their new ones on the way.
At first I thought, well maybe it's just my chickens. But I noticed at the State Fair, many of the chickens being shown were also going through molt. They typically display feather loss in October as well, which I only know since there is usually a big poultry show then.
The adult turkeys have almost completed their molts. Murphy was strutting around without a tail for a few days, but now his new feathers are starting to show.

Our chickens and turkeys have also been molting early this year. Also, we have an apple tree that has put out fruit this year, and it NEVER has before...
We're down in South Carolina, and like you say, all signs point to a severe winter this year.
