Birds in Trees

It is widely known that turkeys have very good eyesight. They are also very communicative. If they happen to see something that they don't like or are afraid of, they will start vocalizing in a quick succession of a Putt! Putt! Putt! Hunters call this sound a cluck or even an alarm putt.

I have learned when I hear my group of turkeys start clucking this way that something is going on, whether it is a snake by the birds, a strange dog on the property, hawks in the air above.

Or herons.

A great blue heron flew right over the barns today, after trying to perch in a tiny maple and then a larger one. I think the clucking of the turkeys scared him off.
